Professor Andrew McGowan is an Australian scholar of early Christianity and one of the leading Anglican voices in global theological debate. He is Dean and President of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and McFaddin Professor of Anglican Studies and Pastoral Theology.
Born in Melbourne, McGowan trained in classics and theology before completing his PhD at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on how the earliest Christians worshipped, ate, organised themselves, and understood community — themes explored in influential works such as Ascetic Eucharists and Ancient Christian Worship.
Before joining Yale, he served as Warden of Trinity College at the University of Melbourne and has long been active in the Anglican Church of Australia, contributing to its General Synod and Doctrine Commission. He also edited the Journal of Anglican Studies for a decade and writes widely, including his weekly lectionary reflections, Andrew’s Version.
A priest, historian, and public commentator, McGowan is known for combining rigorous scholarship with accessible, often provocative insight into how ancient Christian practice shapes the Church today.
